Question
Hi there, my beagle has a lot of black wax in her ear. It has become alot worse over the past couple of days and seems very tender when I touch it. It is only on one side. Does she require antibotics to get rid of it?

Answer
The first thing you need to do is to have a vet examine clean out the ear.  They need to do cytology to see if there is are rea mites or an infection and what type, and treat the ear based on what they find.  If there is a bacterial infection, then antibiotics are needed.  If it is a fungal infection, then antifungals are needed.  If there is just wax, then a good cleaning may resolve the problem. Most ear problems are related to skin allergies, so that needs treatment as well.
