Basic Set-up Filter

Question
Hello!

I have a 35 gallon empty tank (tank, hood, and light). I want to set up a saltwater aquarium, however, I do not have the space for a large wet/dry filter. My question is: Can I use a regular filter (appropriate for the tank size, of course) and if so will this limit the types of livestock I want( 1 clownfish, 1 tang, 1 lionfish, 1 angelfish, several shrimps or crabs, starfish, and 1 anemonae + some live rock)

I am currently learning all I can about saltwater aquariums, however, I am getting conflicting reports on this particular question. I would GREATLY appreciate any help. Thanks!

Answer

dave,

yes you can use a regular filter. Make sure it filters about 5 times the tanks capacity.  I would suggest you purchase a power filter and maybe a protein skimmer.  this will balance your tank and space won't be an issue.  I am concerned regarding your fish selection.  anemonae's need special lighting or they will perish.  shrimps may get eaten.  Your fish would be fine if you had a bigger tank. It will be too crammed and your filter may not be able too handle the bioload.

1.I like the lion fish (which type lions can get big)
2. Angel fish not a good idea for starters
3. Live rock is excellent and are great bio-filters.
4. tangs are great crabs/star fish I like
get back to me regarding fish selection.
