Question
Hi, im having a little problem trying to keep the nitrate level down, at the moment it's between 10ppm/25ppm, i've had the tank up and running for nearly a year. There's 2 filters running one is called fluval 405 and the other is a rena xp, i've not lost any fish or coral at the moment, the point is when or should i change or clean the filters some people say yes you should and some say don't touch the filters.  look forward to hear from you.

Answer
You want to make sure that you put sponges on the intakes of your canister filters that can be cleaned daily or every other day. Also, you will want to take and clean out (completely scrub with hot water, etc) the canister filters, 1 at a time.

Do you have any biological media in your canister filters or are they running for mechanical? If you do have biological media in there, then you may consider taking it out over a period of 3-4 weeks. Because you have coral, I assume you have live rock, so that means that the live rock should be able to handle biological filtration.
