corals and anemones

Question
I have 5 types of corals in my tank and 4 are doing well. However, my Brain Coral is rapidly declining. H2O quality is very good. I've reduced the temp. from 80 to 77.
I have a green anemone that keeps going to shaded area in the back of the tank. It's very difficult to feed. I have a VHO white 150w actinic in the front and a florescent vho 150w in the back. Could he be moving away from the "white light" or do you think it might be current related

Answer
Hi Greg. As far as the anemone goes he is going to a place that suits his needs best. You should let him be and not move him. It may be lighting related or it may be currant related or even perhaps both. Anemones will often go to a place you don't want them because of viewing purposes or feeding purposes. But you must find a way to work around that. Without knowing exactly what species of anemone its hard for me to say exactly what his needs are but the chances are he knows!
As for the brain coral, they can be very difficult to keep. Depending upon what kind of brain coral you have, it may be one that has special lighting requirements. Each kind of brain coral has different requirements for feeding, water quality, currant, and lighting. Without knowing what kind you have it is hard for me to say what could be going on here. What color the coral is, is also an important fact because green brain corals are more commonly collected from shallower waters and will need very bright illumination where the red variety is collected from much deeper waters and can withstand a somewhat lower level of lighting. All brain corals need to be fed a regular feeding of meaty frozen marine food at night when the sweeper tentacles are extended. Feeding should occur any where from once to several times a week. And you should always offer as varied of a diet as possible. Coral polyp recession has been linked to a nutritional deficit. Basically the nutritional requirements of your brain coral are most likely not being met.
