Question
hello.! sorry about my english i speak spanish but ill try my best.:). im new to this. ive had my saltwater aquarium for about 6 months. i have a purple tip anemone, thats been in my tank for about 2 months. it came completley white, and since i have it its brown and big. my cinnamon clownfish loves it and its super healthy. the problem is with  ALGAE. this green algae has been growing in my aquarium from the day to morning and its been so hard to take it out. ive tried my best, but its still growing in the glass and everywhere, ive noticed that some purple-reddish algae has been growing on the rocks. and some coral tubes ( out of nowhere) but im worried about the green algae is it normal? i havent had problems with it, all of my fish, anemone, feather dust etc are ok. i have good parameters of PH, amonia, nitrate etc. thats the only thing im worried about what can i do? thank you very much for your help.!

Answer
Hi Nadz,

Typically there will be many species of Algae that can grow in a saltwater aquarium. Having some Algae is actually a good thing for the ecosystem of your aquarium. Algae can provide a food source for most fish, and Algae also absorbs nutrients from the water, helping to keep nitrate levels down.

To keep Algae from getting out of hand there are several things you can do, including housing a sufficient "clean up crew" this can consist of snails, crabs and other algae eating marine life such as Blenny fish, Yellow Tang fish, Sea Urchins, etc. If you get an overgrowth of hair algae, you may have to manually remove it by hand.

Other things you can do to limit Algae growth is to make sure to not overfeed your aquarium, put your lights on a scheduled timer, make sure your aquarium is not near a window where it receives to much daylight, do regular water changes, protein skim,  and consider using other filtration apparatus for example a Phosban Reactor which does a great job at keeping red slime down.

Regards,
Dave
