Question
I am relatively new to aquariums. My water is clear, fish in good condition.I have a 35g hexagon tank w/a biowheel filter.I have 2 cory cats,4 black skirt tetra, 5 serpae tetras,1 pleco and 5 blue danio.I just got the danios yesterday. My ph is 7,ammonia and nitrates are low.My problem is I have a white thick stringy growth in parts of gravel, which are large stones, less than 1/4 inch.It doesn't seem to affect anything, but it's bothering me. I just bought a product called Stress Zyme.

Answer
Dear Nicki, welcome to this facinating hobby!
Thick white growth in parts of the gravel can be somewhat of a mystery. But it is typically caused by leftover food un-touched and as harbored mold. This is best siphoned and cleaned the best you can. This mold will sometimes form white balls and often glues itself to the gravel. Try cutting back on feeding and ensure all the food is eaten. Also, do a good 30% water change and siphon as much of it as you can off. Remember to always make your replacement water equal in temperature to that of your aquarium and properly dechlorinate it.

The moldy growth problem shouldn't be re-occuring once you get the situation straightened out. Sounds like you know the good basics of fishkeeping and I wish you the very best with your aquarium!
