Question
Do you have any experience in controlling and treating bad fin rot infections ?
The problem starts with simple nips and then becomes cloudy, then rapidly spreads.
Heavy mucous production and respiratory distress is part of this problem.
Temps: 83-86
NH3 - not detectible
Medium hardness
pH - 6.5 - 6.8
Thank you for whatever suggestions you could make in order to control these conditions

Answer
Hi Rick;

Discus are one of the only fish I have very little experience with. However, I do know that the best thing to do for any disease is frequent water changes. This reduces the amount of bacteria and other pathogens in the water that cause infection. It also boosts the immune systems of the fish.

Discus especially need clean water. Most of the experts I have talked to about them say that they need water changes 3 times a week even when not sick. While they are sick, remove 25% of the water daily and replace with fresh conditioned water.

You might consider visiting the freshwater fish forum and ask your question there;

Additional info that is important is how many fish you have, how big they are and what size tank you have them in.
