Mollys and Cory Catfish

Question
Hi,
I recently 'adopted' a tank from my brother that includes 2 cordy cats and 4 mollies. I know mollies need salt but, I have heard cory catfish are sensitive to it. What is a safe salt concentration for both?
Thanks,
Kylie

Answer
Hi Kylie;

Mollies really don't need salt after all so don't add any. We all used to think they do, but no longer. They can be adapted to and live in salty water but don't require it for good health. What they really need is clean water and veggies in their diets. Replace 25% of the tank water every week and vacuum the gravel every 2 to 3 weeks. Feed them spirulina algae, cucumber chunks, squash chunks, romaine lettuce, algae wafers, green beans, peeled peas, etc. They can nibble on these all day long because they don't spoil in the water as fast as other foods. A basic diet of flake or tiny pellets are necessary as well, but supplement with the other foods at least 3 times a week.
