Todd my betta is SICK

Question
So I've read over a lot of your sick betta questions and answers but none of them seem to fit my situation.  My fish Todd has been the coolest most fiesty little fish I've ever had, I call him my little shark because he usually "attacks" his food.   But lately the past month or so he has been really lazy and when I change his water he goes crazy and literally gulps for air but this time he seems too tired.  I tried putting him by a sunny window because my house is no joke 60 degrees so I hope that helps but I don't know what else to do besides that and changing his water even though that seems to make it worse.  If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate it because this is my favorite little guy.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Joshlyn;

Wow.....He needs to be warmer or he will surely die. Bettas can't survive temperatures below 75 for very long. If you raise it by changing it with warmer water he is only being stressed and subject to temperature shock. Get him a lamp for his tank and put it close. You can even surround his tank with a box or something to keep the heat in. Let it slowly rise to at least 75. Another option is to get a 5 gallon tank and a thermostatically controlled aquarium heater. Five gallons is the smallest tank you can safely use a heater in and they need a 25 watt. Twenty five watts are the smallest heaters made these days with a thermostat. Get one with lights and a small filter too and he will be a very happy little fish.

Hope he feels better soon.......
