Question
James thank you for the quick response to the first question. What is the difference in appearence between "Basket Ball Fist" and eggs that she is not able to spawn, I can not remember the term called for that condition when the eggs stay in her and rott? How can one tell the difference?

Question -
I have a 1200 gallon pond. I have had it for 6 years with Koi and goldfish. It is great shape and all natural. I have a plain gold fish (feeder gold fish I rescued) for 6 years. She is large. She has become extremely large, looks like she is pregant but keeps getting larger and larger to the point her scales are all stretched out. She is eating and behaving normally. I have read what sounds like she is pregnant and not spawning. She was even large after the winter thaw, and has become larger this summer. If she does have rotting eggs in her and is unable to spawn, where can I take her or what can I do to help her. I read that maybe progessional vet help is required?  Any suggestions to help? Does not sound like Dropsy because she is healthy otherwise, just looks like she is going to burst.

Thanks.

Hi Robin,

I am very sad to inform you that your fish is what is called a "Basket Ball Fish".  Sometimes goldfish, growing in the wild can become very round and large, to the point where they look as big and round as a basketball.
Although this looks bad, he is not in any pain at all.  This happens due to natural growth and is not a disease.
Sadly though, it does mean that he/she will have a shorter natural life span.

I hope I helped,
James

Answer
Hi again Robin,

Sorry but I can't remember the name either lol.  The difference is:

Basketball Fish - A basketball fish will get very very large and round.

Fish with rotting eggs - A fish that has rotting eggs inside her will get large and fat but not as big and round as a basketball fish.

I hope I helped,
James
