Question
i have two baby convict and i'm pretty sure they are male and female. At what age or size do they start mating and what behavior do they show towards each other? i heard males are most times far more aggressive..Also what is the best way to sex them? cause i know females have the orange belly and are more colorful. but males have been known to have orange spots as well, but they are usually far smaller and much less prominent that on females.
thanks for your time..

Answer
Hi Steven,
Convicts are one of the easiest fish to mate.  They can start spawning at 1-2 inchs.  The difference is the orange belly, and sometimes during a spawn, the male may have an orange belly too.  The male's dorsal fin is usually longer, and pointier, than the females.
The tank should be at least 25 gallons, and decorated with flat rocks, with either real or fake plants.  The convicts eat pellets, flakes, and frozen foods.  They are not hard to please, but to keep them healthy, a varied diet is recommended.  The fry should be started off on baby brine shrimp as soon as they are free swimming.  Convicts make excellent parents, and will defend their young against any fish in the tank.  They should have a tank of their own, as they are very aggressive when looking after the fry.
I hope this helps.
