Baby Guppies

Hi Lauren,
I have 2 questions:
1. Do baby Guppies need to live with their mother or no??? ...
2. Why are my baby guppies swimming at the top of the tank?
My neighbor gave me a batch of baby fry (guppies) and they swim at the top of the tank and my friend said they need the mom to live or they will grow improperly.

no guppies dont need there mothers..alot of the time themotherends up eating the babies sotruly there arebetter without her...once born they probably dont evenrecognise that fish as there mum and the samefor the mother..

sometimes when the water isnt right or newly moved (shouldnt move them until about 2 months ATLEAST..they swim at the top

also so man are born because not alot survive, if 30 were born you could have anything between 0-12 survive...sometimes more if your very lucky
