New 20-gallon Tank

Question
Hi. My name is Mason and I am 13 years old. I am getting a 20-gallon tank in the fall. I am wondering if you have suggestions on what type of fish that would do good in a 20-gallon tank. I recently kept 8 goldfish with no problem. I would like something different than goldfish though. I am also wondering if you use soft tap water or hard tap water. Thank you.

Answer
Mason,

It all depends on what type of tank you will be keeping. Salt water or fresh water. Cold or tropical. The best advice I can give you is to research different types of fish until you find one type of fish you just have to have. Read how to take care of it and what to feed them. Once you have picked a fish, then we can see who would make good tank mates. Remember, cold water fish, like goldfish, do not need heaters where as tropical fish do. Your tap water should be fine, just remember to add a water conditioner to any water being added to the tank. Also, you will need to cycle the tank before you add any fish. This will take between 2 to 4 weeks. Once you figure out what type of fish you want, come back here and we can find it tank mates.
