When one lovebird dies

Question
Hi,
I had a pair of lovebirds and a few days ago, the female died.  The male calls for her now and then but he is eating normally and interacts with me just fine when I let him out of his cage to play everyday. I know he misses her and I'm not sure whether I should find a new mate for him or just spend more time with him and give him toys and treats?  Is there a grieving period for him?

Thank you,
Lisa

Answer
Hello Lisa, I am sorry for your loss and the little guys too.

Yes he would be missing her and will miss her for some time(weeks/months) you can never truely replace a true partner(another lovebird) yourself because even thou you can take him out daily and pet him and talk to him he will still eat alone/sleep alone and has noone to scratch his head in the nights and noone to sing with when your not there, I reccomend getting another young tame female and start by housing them side by side and letting them play out of cage together before housing them together to pervent future fights.

Good Luck with whatever you choose to do and feel free to ask any further questions you may have.
