Question
Why would a horse colic from fluctuations in temperature during the spring months?  Or is that an old wives tale?

Answer
Hi Andy,

Thank you for your question.  It is true that horses are at a slightly higher risk of colic in the springtime when temperatures vary greatly...but generally the colic is not due to the change in temperature.  The increased risk of different kinds of colic is due mostly due to diet changes, variations in water consumption and feed intake, and management changes that come with changes in temperature. So although the weather itself is not a source of concern, this certainly is the time of year to be more aware of the risk, and keep an eye on your horses.  Try to transition changes in rations gradually, ensure that your horses have sufficient water available as the sun gets hotter through the day and don't radically change your daily routines...horses truly are creatures of habit and although they too enjoy the warmer weather, you need to work them into it gradually.

Thanks, Corlena
