older mare not eating

Question
Amanda, we have an older mare (23-25), She was having an issue eating a week or so after getting her teeth floated, then it seemed to get worse. We have had the Vet out and after blood tests he said she had a minor infection, we gave her Naxacel (sp)and we are still not seeing the improvement we should. Old gal gets 2 lbs of timothy in the am and pm, alfalfa pelletys with her senior feed. She now wont eat the alfalfa pellets, barely gets through the senoir feed, and wont finish the timothy. We have tried making a mash as well as trying beet pulp an she would not touch it. Any ideas at all would be a great help.
thank you,
Madeline

Answer
hi madeline,
have the vet give you peneciline and give her a vitamine b-12 shot.the penaciline is an atibiotic and the vitamine b-12 shot will boost her appatite. with ger grain get rice bran powder it will give her extra nutrients and weight so she doesnt get skinny. wheat bran is also good to mix the grain with. it is easy for her to chew.  another antibiotic you can use is Cephalexin. it is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, urinary tract, respiratory tract, bones and joints. It is available as 250mg and 500mg capsules and as a liquid containing 250mg/5ml. When mixed with water the liquid should be kept in the refrigerator and any unused portion should be discarded after 14 days. good luck and let me know how things are going.
