loss of mane

Question
I am purchasing a 3 year old gelding that has bald spots on his mane.  I thought it was from rubbing through a fence but the owner said she shaved it a few months ago to see if it would grow back and it did grow back with the bald spots still there.  No crust, puss, flakes, on the skin; just regular looking skin with no mane hairs.  Could this be a nutrition problem?  How about deworming?  What is the best dewormer and how often?  How soon could I see results after he comes home to my place and I "fix" him up?  How about washing with betadine or tea tree oil?

Answer
hi diana, even though she shaved the mane he could still be rubbing it in the same spots. if not then it could be a nutrition problem. feed him triple crown complete. this will give him the nutrition he is lacking. the best dewormer is ivermectine 1.87. you should worm a horse monthly but you can do it everyother month as well. each horse is different and it is hard to tell when gthe hair will grow back but if it is not growing back within the month call your vet. you can try washing him with an iodine solution. if it is a fungus it will kill it right away. tea tree products are great and will help the hair grow so it is also good to use that as well. good luck.
