Insurance for horses in fire country

Question
I just bought a gelding with outrageously good breeding.

I also live in San Diego county, and right in the line of the worst fires. I was wondering (God forbid) that if I lost my horse to a fire, is there insurance that will cover his loos?

Answer
Yes, you can get insurance for specific types of loss, including fires.  If you do an on line search for 'Equine insurance' you should be able to find different companies.  I believe this type of coverage would be in addition to basic coverage- there may be a separate premium for that.

There are some things you can do to help your horse in the event of a wild fire.

1- If you have your own barn - make sure you have a clear area around the barn - 100' or so if possible - have as little burnable items in this area.

2- Permanently identify your horse.  You can get a microchip fairly inexpensively (I get mine from NetPosse)- it is a permanent identification in case your horse gets loose, or God forbid is stolen.

3- Have a PLAN!  During wild fire season, have a plan for how you will evacuate your horse (and any other animals) to a safe area.  Find a facility ahead of time that you know you can use in an emergency.  DO NOT wait until evacuations are ordered before moving animals - be aware of the weather and fire dangers, and get out early.  Murphy's Law is that when you need to load a horse quickly, that will be the time it does NOT want to load and takes forever.....
