Water breaking

Question
How do I tell if my mares water broke or if she was just urinating?

Answer
Wes;

if the water breaks, there is a ton of fluid that comes out and it doesnt smell like urine. also shortly after the water breaks the mare starts to strain to expel the foal. You may even see a nose and/or a foot in the vulvar opening. If your mare is approaching the time to foal, I strongly suggest you do everything you can to educate yourself on the expected sequence of events so that you can realize if and when there is a problem. There is not alot of lee-way in this time and rapid intervention is sometimes needed to help the foal and the mare to make it though safely. Please do what you can to prepare yourself for this, otherwise you run the risk of not knowing when and if assistance is needed. That can jeaprodize the life of both the mare and the foal. Good luck.
