poping knee

Question
Hi Dorothy,

I have a 9y Appy/TB that I have had since he was 8months old. I am doing dressage with him. He has this odd thing with his knees, they pop every once in a while during warm up. Then after it is like jello legs. I am not working him hard as I am not in good shape right now. My trainer and I are just baffled as to the cause. He is a very nice mover, shows no sing of pain, heat, swelling, and is a happy horse.

Thank you for your incite,
Lisa and Bobby

Answer
Hi Lisa and Bobby,

I am not sure what you mean by jello legs.  If you have consulted your vet, and he has done xrays and finds nothing wrong, and if the horse moves like he is sound, I would not worry. It could be simply a tendon or ligament popping. However, if jello legs means that he seems weak, or if you have not had him checked by a vet, do so immediately.

Happy riding,
Dorothy
