Draft horses soft heel

Question
I have a Clydesdale and we live in Florida. When I first got her, her previous owners were having trouble getting rid of a bacterial infection on her back heels. I got rid of it & haven't had trouble until recently.  We have had a very wet summer & it has been hard to keep her in a dry area. One of her heels seems to be developing the infection again, and the hoof heel seems to be desinegrating & is spreading to her frog. What can I do? for it?

Answer
Hello Alexis...Thank you for the question !!

Without seeing the horse, I'm naturally speculating. It sounds like "Canker" not Thrush. Florida has "high-humidity"
like other southern states. You must try and move this horse
and dry the hooves at any cost. You cannot stop the
bacteria any other way!! It can and will eat into the
coronary band and soft tissue above the hoof capsule and into the heel bulbs.
Every experienced farrier has his/her "niche" when it comes to treatments. I will use methiolate and "wonder-dust" by
Farnam (Phoenix,AZ.). I will apply the methiolate first; then the "dust" and bandage every other day for 2 weeks...then I'll treat it topically with the "wonder-dust".

You need to pick or rub with fingers and a clean cloth before applying. DON'T use water or any moisture of any kind. When cleaning it, it will often times bleed. That's where the methiolate will dry and disinfect and the "dust' will eat away the problem. It has copper sulfate, talc, lime,
and activated charcoal to dry and cure. Bleeding is a good sign. It show "live tissue". Draft breeds and some warm-bloods are very susceptible to this problem.
I've had great luck with this mixture for over 17 years !!

If I can help you in any other way, please let me know !
Thanks again...
