QuestionI have a Red-Footed Tortoise that I rescued last year. It is about 9 lbs and in good health. Today I notice the skin on his back leg was peeled down showing raw and bloody. I washed the area and put neosporen on the area. By this evening the entire leg skin has peeled down leaving a white area that looks a little bloody. I wrapped it with gauze and tape but It seems like when he moves around his shell pushes on the skin and pushes it down like a sock. I put him in a container inside with damp towels hoping he wouldn't injury it further. Any suggestions.
AnswerHi Jen,
You're doing the right thing in keeping him in a clean area for now. Do you have any idea how the injury occurred? My concern would be that its continuing to worsen. If you can post a clear picture it would help, but if I were you I would get him to a vet at the beginning of next week. Open wounds on tortoises take some time to heal and can be prone to infection, so he may need a course of antibiotics to prevent infection.
If you post back, set it to *private* and I'll give you my email so you can send better pictures. If you don't already have a tortoise vet I may be able to help you find one.
