Question
QUESTION: Hi Betty,I am writing to ask you about housing for my gliders.I was wanting to know what your opinion is about multi-tiered cages.Basically they're like 2 cages stacked on top of one another that CANNOT be combined into one.I am wanting to know if it would be okay to put a pair in each cage?(1male/1female,4 gliders total,2 in each section)I am not sure if their scents would create any problems. They are used to the smell of each other rite now because the cages are about 15 feet away from one another, but I am trying to save some space and this would help me out tremendously!I didnt want to purchase the cage with that question in mind not knowing if it would cause problems. You have been SO HELPFUL in the past that I trust your advice,so once again could you please help.....??

Thank you again,
      Jen

ANSWER: Jen,

Thanks for the question.  I am trying to picture what the cages look like.  What happens to the waste materials from the top cage?  Does the top cage have a bottom with a tray for cleaning?

As for he smells combining, I don't think it would be a problem.  They might fuss at one another for a while, but would adjust.  I say that because my cages are right next to each other, and the gliders are fine with that.  There is only about an inch separating my three cages.

If you could describe the cage better, I might be able to tell you more.  How big is it?  Does it have bars?  If so,how far apart are they?  Do you have a photo?

Thanks!

Betty

QUESTION: Hi Betty, again, thanks for your super fast reply! The cage measurements are 30x18x36 each with their own individual pull out waste trays and the bars are 7/16 inches apart. Its 2 cages stacked on top of each other (that can't come apart)and  the total measurements are 30x18x78"(w its stand on wheels). The waste tray from the top cage separates the 2 cages and keeps the waste from going down into the cage underneath along with keeping the gliders separated. You can go on the website cageworld.com and look at it under the category Sugar Glider Cages. Its on the 2nd page of cages. Its the black cage titled 'Sugar Glider Chinchilla Rat Cages for $149.00.That would be the only picture because I haven't bought it yet because I wasn't sure how my babies would react. Now when you say fuss at each other for a while are you saying they would just be crabbing at each other? And how long do you think is the'normal' length of time for this 'fussing'? You don't think that it would stress them out too much do you? I hope this gives you a better idea of the cage and what I'm talking about and you will be able to see it on the website.I look forward to hearing from you and your response.THANK YOU so much again! I'm glad that there are people like you to help people like me.You have been such a great help!Thank you!Thank you!Thank you!

ANSWER: Jen,

Thanks for sending the link.  Now I understand.  The gliders have no actual contact.  They can't even see each other,so it shouldn't be a problem at all.

I do have two concerns, though.  I had a large bird cage at one time, and there were issues.  For one, the connections weren't very secure, and the gliders were able to get out in the corners and through the doors.  I had to use twist ties and plastic zip ties to hold the cage together and secure the doors.  Also, somehow the gliders were able to bend the bars and escape.

I really couldn't see the quality of construction for the cage you are considering.  If the connections are secure and the bars are strong enough, it should be fine.  Your call on this one, I'm afraid.

I will take a look online and see if I can find anything else.

I hope this helps.  I'll contact you if I find any deals.  Where do you live?

Betty

QUESTION: Hi,Thanks for the response.I live in Illinois.I have 2 gliders in the single version of this cage (30x18x55)and its sturdy enough for them to run around in and they have not been able to escape(thank goodness)so I'm sure that the 2nd cage will be of the same quality.(its from the same company)So now since I feel confident that the layout of the cages will not affect the gliders in any way that would hurt them,I will go ahead and order it :) yay!!! Thanks again!!! I'm sure I will be talking with you again in the future.PLEASE KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK!!

Answer
Jen,

Good.  I'm glad you know about the construction of this cage.  I wouldn't have wanted to recommend it and then have it turn out to be rickety.  It is really a good deal!

Thanks for the compliments.  Good luck.  Let me know if you have any other questions.
