Whites Treefrog...Sick or Normal?

Question
My girlfriend recently purchased two Blue Dumpy/Whites Treefrogs from petsmart for my birthday. They seemed to being doing pretty well, but I heard that petsmart is a suspect dealer when it comes to frogs, reptiles etc. One of them is much smaller than the other has an extra front toe and is often brown, bloated, and quite lazy. I know I accidentally fed this little guy too many crickets because the bigger one was asleep, and he got down about six in one sitting before I removed him and let the other one finish up. He hasn't eaten much (like one cricket every two or three days) since. I'm sure I'm just being paranoid but I'm worried he might be sick. So I went and got a new exo terra 18 by 18 by 24 high terrarium to create a sterile environment. He seems a little better, but still I am concerned because I read that Chytrid fungus is prevalent this time of year, that petsmart sells sick frogs, and bloating laziness and a lot of time in the water are often signs of different infection/illness, however they are also typical of this species of frog as well(lots of fat, brown, lazy White's treefrogs out there). He is climbing, but not often. Mostly he is just sitting on the same leaf every time I look at him in crouched tucked in withdrawn posture, plus his extra toe(?). I don't know, am I a paranoid owner of an overfed/fat little Dumpy Treefrog or could there be a real problem? How do you tell bloating from fattening? He was kinda bloated/fat looking when I got him too, its just gotten worse.

Answer
Hi Keith:

I hope that you are being paranoid because I have never heard of Pet-Smart selling bad animals.  They back up their health guarantee and knowingly selling a sick animal just to replace it would cost them more then they make.   Are you "Gut loading" your crickets?  There is about 5% nutrition benefit in a cricket, they have to be fattened up to pass the good stuff on to the frog or lizard who feeds on them.  Ask the pet store about gut loading items that they must have in stock and feed your crickets well before giving them to the frog.   Do you have a "UVA & UVB light on the frogs?  This will build up resistance to several diseases and give them better health.   As for the extra toe, if they did not charge you for it, so much the better, more frog for the money so to speak.

I would suggest to you that the frogs will be OK if they receive the proper food, correct light and clean spring water but please remember, I AM NOT A VET. If you continue to have doubts or the frog is definitely acting sick, please see a Vet.  My specialty is in venomous species of snakes but I do have several dart frogs and a few tree frogs.  You might want to read the biography of some of the other people here and ask the same question to one of them, I may have missed something obvious that just did not click to me.
