rabbit needs to be put to sleep

Question
My daughter owns a pet "beloved" older rabbit with health issues, who needs to be put down, as we are moving to a location where the rabbit will not be welcome. She does not want him to be with another owner, being concerned for his happiness and loving environment. The Vet will do it, but wants to charge us $50... We do not have $50, and we do not know of an alternative. I wanted to put him to sleep "naturally" with something like choloroform (sp) or something that would be painless and not TOOO stressful on me. I do not even know where to purchase such an item. I was raised on a farm and we put several animals down during those years, but this is very difficult.. Can you help us with this problem. Please respond quickly.

Answer
While I have never had to put a pet rabbit down, I have had to "destroy" some others that have been attacked by the neighbor's dogs.  I could not do it myself and had an old farmer take care of it for me - you probably do not want to use his method.

As for something you can get on your own to take care of it, there is nothing that I am aware of that you can get legally without being a vet.

Contact your local animal control (dog pound) and ask what they would charge to help you out.  They are licensed to put animals to sleep and don't have the "overhead" a vet does.

Sorry I can't help you more.
