QuestionI have a problem with my 5 week old rabbit. It's hind legs are twisting outward. He is having difficulties walking but he can get around some. It started out very mild, but now, the legs are layed completely out to the side and he is laying on his stomach. What do you think is causing this? Should we have him put to sleep?
AnswerDear Jessica,
Your wee bunny is suffering from a congenital condition sometimes called "splayleg." Fortunately, since he is this young, you may be able to correct the problem with the splinting and physical therapy outlined here:
www.bio.miami.edu/hare/splayleg.html
but this should be started ASAP, before his soft tissue and joints are permanently damaged. Be sure he has a good surface for traction, as slick surfaces (linoleum, wood flooring, tile) are very bad for rabbits and can really exacerbate this problem.
At five weeks of age, your bunny is too young to be weaned, so be on very close watch for any sign of runny stool, which can be fatal in a baby so young. Please see:

for complete information.
I hope this helps, and that you can get your little pal upright and walking again soon! Please write back if you have more questions.
