bunny with dry skin

Question
My bunny is a little over a year old and his molars were extracted since they misaligned.  He is healthy overall and has no problem eating without his molars.  However, within the last few weeks, I have noticed that the hair easily comes off on his back towards his tail area, and that he keeps licking and probably swallowing the hair.  He has always had a few dry spots on his body but I have never seen the fur comes off just by me running my fingers through them.  Do bunnies tend to get dry spots on their skin and what can I do to help?

Answer
Dear Carly,

It's shedding season, so if the fur is growing back in normally, I wouldn't worry too much.  Just be sure to pluck it off or comb it out before he ingests it.  Be sure he gets plenty of fresh timothy hay, fresh water, and fresh greens to keep his intestinal motility up so that any ingested hair will pass through uneventfully.

If you see bald spots, flakiness, or irritated skin under the lost fur, however, please read this for instructions on what to do:

It could be mites, which are easily and safely treated with Revolution (NOT FRONTLINE!  DEADLY!) from your vet.  If you don't have a good rabbit vet, you can find one here:

Hope this helps!
