Amy Sedaris interview -- home rabbits

22 11:20:18

Question
Amy Sedaris seemed to imply during an interview recently that the rabbit in her new york apartment had been trained to be continent of stool.  Is there such a thing as a rabbit that can control where it has bms?  This is the main deterrent keeping me from having a rabbit--the poop part of the deal.

Answer
Dear Amy,

Amy Sedaris is one of our favorite Bunny Ambassadors!  :)

Rabbits can, indeed, be litterbox trained.  The important step is to have the bunny spayed or neutered, just as with any indoor companion animal, since hormones will promote territorial marking.

The best idea is to contact your local rabbit rescuer, whom you can locate here:

www.rabbit.org/chapters

and meet some of the rescued bunnies needing homes.  They all will be spayed/neutered already, and the fosterer can tell you which bunnies have the best litterbox habits.  (A few stray poops could still happen, but since rabbit poop is dry and odorless, it's a small matter to just sweep them up.)

You can read more about what it's like to live with a rabbit as a companion here:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/firstrabbit.html

and of course, here:

www.rabbit.org

Hope this helps!  Please write back if you have any other questions.
