rabbit breeding!

Question
Hi,
I have 3 rabbits, one male and two females (i think!) One of the females is about one yr, and the other two aprox 4 months. I've had to separate the biggest one because it tries to mate even though shes a female, is that normal? so i've got the two small ones together, and when they do breed do you need to take her away or can u just put the nesting box in with them? thanks!

Answer
Hi,
With your rabbits being the age they are you should have them all in separate cages. Dwarf breeds can begin breeding as early as 3 1/2 months which is way too young for a rabbit to have babies although possible. To answer your question... You must ALWAYS remove the buck from the doe's cage after breeding. The buck can cause the doe to miscarry, to kill her own liter, and he can kill the litter too. Never ever ever keep a buck in with a pregnant or nursing doe or a doe that is able to get pregnant for that matter. Sorry to be so blunt, but I just wanted to let you know how important that was. Once pregnant you should move the buck not the doe, you don't want that added stress of moving her. Just leave the buck in with the doe for about 1 hour when breeding so that the two don't start fighting.  If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
