Mini Rex sudden death

Question
Hi,
We had a mini rex male that was about 3 months old.  Last night he was fine, running around and being cute, and this morning we found him dead in his cage.  The only thing I noticed was that we was drinking a lot of water.  Everything else looked normal.  We fed him Timothy Hay and had not gotten into any real treats yet.  What could have happened to him?

Answer
First off I want to apologize for taking so long to get back with you, and tell you that I am sorry for your loss.

Because I am not a vet, nor have I ever seen your rabbit it would be really hard for me to say for sure what happened.  It could have been anything from a heart attack or stroke, to fear, to genetics issues, to a internal digestive issue.  It sounds as if you were doing everything you were supposed to.  Drinking alot of water in the hot weather is fairly normal (i assume it is summer where you) if it is not hot where you live, it could have been a sign of diabetes or a tooth issue, although you would have seen other symptoms.

Sometimes young rabbits who are suddenly switched diets can die of digestions problems.  Rabbits have very sensitive systems and any sort of sudden change can cause problems.

I am sorry I am unable to help you further, if you really wanted to know you could take him to the vet for an autopsy, but those are very expensive, and don't always tell you why.

Good Luck
Amy
