Sudden illness?

Question
We have an outdoor dwarf bunny that is usually very spunky and lively.  As we approach his hutch/cage, he runs up and down and all around with excitement and greets us at the hutch door.  Last night at 11pm, it was acting fine (I had gone out to check on him to make sure his food was full).  Today, he is very lethargic and is just sitting in one spot with his eyes half way open.  He hasn't eaten much, if any.

We live in MN and his hutch is winterized pretty well.

We don't want him indoors as both myself and my son have asthma, so that is why he is an outdoor rabbit.  We did end up putting him in the basement just a bit ago, and he has not moved since bringing him in.  As my husband carried him, we noticed a strong, horrible odor and he had some very loose stools on him; the same consistency as mucus.

He has sort of gooey, wet eyes and has them open only half way.

Any ideas?

Answer
Hi michele,
How old is your rabbit?  Illnesses do come on quickly for rabbits, and sounds like he's caught some kind of bacterial infection.  I would keep him really quiet in a warm safe place, with clean bedding.  Give him some rice water(make rice and keep the water you boiled it in  feeding this as his water for a few days).
this should help the diarhea. As for his eyes, you can put warm compresses on them to clean them, and hopefully that'll clear up.
If there's no improvement by 12 hours, see a vet. He may need medication for something more serious.
 Good luck , Elizabeth
