Question
Hi there, I bought two bunnies last sat, they are a boy and girl, I had the boy neutered on Wednesday just gone and its now Friday.  I know to keep them apart for a couple of weeks as the sperm is still living but Im concerned that he hasn't really eaten yet, I am going to take him to the vet in the morning but I just want to check if this was normal?

They have been having play dates for 10 mins in a neutral run and they are doing alot of dominating behavior but I have read that this needs to happen.  Although I wasnt aware that female rabbits mount males?  Its so stressfull as they were so in love before hope they can become friends again.

Your advice would be very helpfull right now.

Answer
Dear Vicky,

If he didn't start eating the day after surgery, it is cause for concern.  A neuter is a relatively minor procedure, and he may need a "jump start" with some fresh herbs.  Please read:

for more information on post operative care of a bunny.

Don't try bonding them so soon after surgery, as the stress will make his recovery slower.  Please refer to these helpful articles to learn about good bonding techniques.

And have her spayed as soon as possible, since this will reduce her mounting behavior and remove her very high risk of uterine cancer.  Please read:

www.rabbit.org/health/spay.html

and find a good rabbit vet here:

for a second opinion, if you need one.

I hope this helps.
