QuestionI recently had my rabbit neutered and about 5 days post-op his wound has not healed. It is red, swollen, and "pussy" looking--also a foul odor is coming from the room. I know this can't be right, is it serious enough to find a vet at night to take him? Are there any steps I can take tonight to help him?
AnswerHi,
no, it is not good. If you have an emergency vet service I would consider it, especially if you call them and they have a vet that is a specialist with rabbits. Otherwise you must get to a rabbit vet as early as possible tomorrow morning (some are open Saturdays) - call ahead and tell them you are coming in with a bunny that is septic from an infected neuter procedure, so they can prepare for you and be ready for you.
Make sure he is eating and drinking and I doubt he will let you get near the problem area.
If you need to find a good rabbit vet near you go here:
www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html
and find a House Rabbit Society recommended vet near you. Otherwise you'll have to check your local vet listings in the phone book and see if they have a good rabbit vet and ifthey are open tomorrow for a serious case.
I would not let it wait past tomorrow.
