Mischeivous?

Question
In all honesty, I don't know much about rabbits at all.  I had one when I was younger but he was strictly an outside bunny.  I recently bought a mini rex from an Amish auction in October.  I don't know how old he is and I can only assume that's what it is from the tag that was on his cage but I'm not entirely sure.  From what I've found and read on the internet, he looks and feels much like they describe.  I'm not too worried about the breed but more worried about his behavior.
Within the past couple of days he's been acting strange.  He's been biting and nuzzling my hand.  I thought maybe he was teething, but then I thought he would be too old to be cutting teeth.  Then I thought maybe he's sexually frustrated.  I think he might be too young for that though.  So my last thought is that he just hates me haha.
I honestly don't know why he started doing this.  He's drawn blood once but the rest of the time he just nibbles or sticks the side of my finger to the back of his mouth and just gnaws on me.  I don't know what the nuzzling means either.  He takes his head and shoves my hand away and at the same time chews on me.
What should I do?
Also, what should I do/know to make sure I'm taking care of him properly?

UPDATE

I will add one thing, and that is that being a prey animal, rabbits often do take a long time to develop a strong trust in people.  It is possible that you may be trying to go too fast for him.

END UPDATE

Hi Audrey,

well, his behavior cna be one or more things.  He may smell something good on your fingers and is thinking he can nibble whatever it is.  He may not like the way you are petting his face.  He may just be trying to move your hand.  He could be sexually frustrated, if he is older than 3 1/2 months old.  It could be the way he grooms a buddy.

I would probably suspect he's close or already sexually mature, lots of rabbits like the pheromones people give off.  If he runs around your feet and makes a light little honking noise, he's sexually mature and he loves you.  Rabbits don't distinguish between love and sex, so don't regard it as some kind of icky thing.  Even after he's neutered (in the future) he will still probably circle you.  It's a sign of affection whether they have a lot of hormones or a little bit of hormones.

Instead of writing a ton of stuff you can find elsewhere, written more in depth, I will point you to the best references out there:

The House Rabbit Society (HRS) web site:   www.rabbit.org

They have hundreds of free articles to browse and print out and (make a reference folder) keep for reference/use, on all aspects of rabbit care and behavior.  They also have a section of rabbit vets that is invaluable (not all vets are good rabbit vets):

www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html

to find a House Rabbit Society-recommended vet near you.

Second, The House Rabbit Handbook.  you can order from HRS or get it at your local bookstore.

Third, House Rabbits for Dummies.  An excellent book despite the title.
