Question
Hi my name is Kristen. I am twelve and I have two bunnies named Thumper and Rofu. Rofu is a black and white shorthair male. Thumper is a. gray long haired female. She just had babies on Christmas and they had all passed away because she was to young. I wanted to no if loose hair was a sign? I also wanted to know if the father bunny can be kept with the mother and the babies.

Answer
Hi Kristen. You will need to keep your male and female in separate cages. I would guess that your female is pregnant again and will have babies about the first of February. This is what rabbits do :o) The male rabbit will run your female to death while she is pregnant wanting to breed with her and he will breed with her again as soon as she has a litter. Your doe will not have her first litter raised and she will be having more. It just isn't a good thing for the bunnies or you. If you found loose hair in the cage it means one of two things. The mother may have been looking for a place to build a nest OR the male rabbit may be pulling her hair out because he is angry that she will not mate with him. I suggest that you separate them. About the 25th of January check your doe to see if she feels fat and if so give her a box to build a nest in. She will need some straw or hay in her box. She will make a hole in the straw and line it with fur which she pulls from her belly and sides. Then she will cover the babies with more fur. Have you ever thought about showing bunnies? It makes raising and keeping them so much fun. If I can help further let me know, and good luck with your next litter.   Pat
