Old Rabbit Whimpers when sleeping

Question
Dr. Krempels,

I have a rabbit that is about 8 1/2 years old.  Recently, he's been whimpering in his sleep.  At first I thought he was having bad dreams but I'm wondering if he's having mild seizures and he just appears to be sleeping.  He's eating fine and is very good health otherwise.  A vet couldn't find anything wrong with him.  Do you have any experience with this?

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Dear Allen,

Yes, I've had bunnies who "talked in their sleep" on occasion.  It's pretty cute, as long as the dreams are happy.  But once I had a bunny who was recently bereaved, and as she finally fell asleep in my arms when I was comforting her, she started to dream, and she *screamed* in her dream.  Poor little girl.  She has since recovered and has a new mate, but she was obviously so traumatized by her loss that it showed up in her dreams. :(

Your bunny might well be having disturbing dreams, though what they might be will forever be a mystery.  If there's some new stress or change in his life, that could contribute.  Just make sure he's comfy and happy in his waking life, and his dreams may soon follow suit.

Hope that helps.
