Question
My house Rabbits which i rescued about 9 months ago (who are believed to be sisters) Clover and Nutmeg, began fighting for the first time today. They have lived harmoniously the whole time i have had them. but when i came down to see them this morning there was fur everywhere- i picked up about two large handfuls (i presume its so much as this is the time of year they shed winter fur?), didn't know what had happened until a bit later when i saw them fighting - this has happened a few times today i keep breaking it up but i don't understand why they are doing it or what i should do. Between fights i have noticed Clover pushing her head low to the ground and nudging Nutmeg- mostly under her tail. I have also noticed it sems to be Clover starting the fights but also Nutmegs gets a lot of Clovers fur in her mouth afterwards. They don't seem to be injured and they are both spayed. please help me i am very worried, and too scarred to leave them alone.

Answer
Hi Sam

Occasionally even spayed rabbits with have fights.  The best thing to do is to keep an eye on them for a while and when you catch them fighting spray them with a water bottle.  One of them must have decided that they didn't want the other to be the dominant bunny any more and they are just trying to find their place again.

I wouldn't leave them alone together until they are cuddling and loving again but I would make sure that they have as much time together as possible so that the bond isn't completely broken.  Sometimes you have to let them fight to figure things out.  You just have to make sure that they aren't shedding blood.  I know it is hard to watch but that is how they determine who is the boss.

Honestly I am not sure why it happened all of the sudden but they should figure out their positions again soon.  It may have been a one time thing.  Try taking the for a car ride together and see if they cuddle with each other.  Often times that will help them to rebond.  Just don't give up.  If they continue to fight then you may have to go through the whole bonding process all over again.  If that is the case please let me know and I will explain it all to you.

Good luck

Pam
