Bunny eye problem

Question
My 4yr old female Netherlands dwarf has suddenly developed what looks like a blood sack around the upper half of her right eye.  It looks like a hemorrhage of some kind.  Will it go away on it's own or should I take her to the vet? What could have caused it?  I'd appreciate any insight.

Answer
Dear Kat,

I can't see the eye to really know what's going on, but a burst blood vessel can cause the equivalent of a hematoma in the eye.  It might go away on its own, but if this were my bunny, I would want a good rabbit vet--and preferably a veterinary ophthalmologist--to have a look and see if it's anything that needs treatment.

The most likely reason for this is trauma, but there are other possibilites.  I hope you will be able to find a good rabbit vet with the list linked here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

and get your bun there for evaluation and treatment as necessary.

Hope this helps.
