Rabbit losing eyesight?

22 10:01:12

Question
Mr. Meyer:

I adopted a rabbit (5 year old female) from a rescue about a month ago.  Her eyesight does not seem as good as our other rabbit's eyesight (3 year old male).  If we hold out our hand to feed her, she almost always misses it and we have to direct her toward the food.  Our male rabbit does not have the same problem.  We took her to the vet for an unrelated issue (she had a bladder infection), and he did not seem concerned.  Should I worry?  Are there other signs I should be watching for in her?  She is very much loved and I don't want her to suffer because of this.

Answer
Hi,

my suggestion is to find a different vet.  Not all vets are good rabbit vets.  Clearly you can identify a perception issue that is not there with your other rabbit.  Given you know less of her medical history than your 3 year old, I strongly suggest finding a good rabbit vet.  No offense, I'd say get a new vet regardless, I would never have anyone treat my rabbits that did not seem concerned about a medical issue I was concerned about my rabbit having, especially with such obvious signs there's a real issue going on.

Start here:

to find a House Rabbit Society recommended vet near you.  They will have a lot more experience with rabbits, understand how important it is to manage their pain after procedures, and be able to diagnose and treat problems more accurately and faster - better care - (which get your rabbits better quicker and save you time and money, in the long run).
