Question
Hello, My rabbit's stool suddenly changed color about two days ago.I've been feeding her timothy hay for about three days now, only because I've very busy and couldn't find the time to buy more food pellets. My question is why has the color (light brown)changed and what can i do to prevent this from happening again? And thank you for your time.Beth :)

Answer
Hi,

it's all about the pigments in what they are eating that will affect color.  Pellets tend to be greener, they are pelleted compressed hay.  Hay itself is a light green but hasa lot of fiber.  So as it breaks down you have a lot more material with less coloring in it - volume-wise - than food pellets which turn into a green paste.  So the color change will occur when you change what you feed them.  If they nibbled ona wood toy with natural dye in it that could change their color.  Not only of fecal pellets but also urine color.  Carrots for example will turn urine towards the orange-red color.

And don't worry about not feeding pellets, as long as they have good hay, rabbits could survive on hay alone, as this is what they are designed to eat (grasses).  It won't hurt her being off the pellets and it sounds she's making up for no pellets by eating more hay.
