BABY RABBIT W/SWOLLEN GUMS

Question
My daughters first day with a new domestic, female, baby rabbit.  It's gums are swollen and it eats only on one side.  What might be the problem?

Answer
Dear Eve,

If the bunny was dropped or fell from a height and landed on her face, then she could have injured her mouth.  I would get her to a good rabbit vet ASAP:

for evaluation.

Broken teeth will grow back. But if there is a bone injury, the bunny's jaw could heal crooked and she could suffer a malocclusion for the rest of her life.

If she is eating, that's a good sign.  But I would certainly want to have her mouth checked by a rabbit expert vet who can at least prescribe pain medication.
