Answer
Pot-Bellied pig food looks pretty boring to us, but the pigs seem to love it. Commercial food is a balanced diet containing enough essential nutrients and trace minerals to be a complete diet. But, it lacks the texture and fresh fiber found in vegetables and grazing grass, and most people prefer to supplement pellets with fresh veggies.

Commercial feed companies are required to list the ingredients on the package, in descending order of quantity. For example, if the list says "oats, alfalfa", the feed has more oats. But there's no easy way to know just how much is oats and how much is alfalfa. Most feed companies guard these proportions carefully, so their feed can't be copied.

It's difficult for the average pet pig owner to mix their own complete feed. A balanced feed contains many ingredients and the right balance of nutritional supplements. It's much cheaper and easier to buy one bag of quality feed than to buy and store five or more bags of various grains, plus the supplements necessary to guarantee all nutritional needs are met. It's hard for the average pet owner to do a nutritional analysis on a batch of homemade food. Commercial companies monitor the levels of fat, protein and nutrition, as well as the quality of raw ingredients.

Mills that mix custom feed usually have several proven recipes that can be tweaked to meet certain specifications, such as a minimum fat content. But, most mills also require very large minimum batches.

If you're determined to make your own, www.farec.org has a comparison chart for many brands of pot-bellied pig food. Look up the complete ingredients list for several of the feeds and use them as a guide.
