Entropion

Question
Hi Helen, Last May our 2 yr old pbp had surgery for Entropion, eyelashes scratching the eye. He had some of the fat pads removed above the eye. Ever since he can't open his eyelids, he looks up to see us. He still has a lot of draining. I am just hoping he isn't in pain. I am afraid to go back to the U of MN, they were
in such a hurry to do this surgery which was very traumatic for all of us, especially our pig. We were not prepared for what we saw. I am afraid they will want to do surgery again. Do you think since its a teaching enviornment they jump at any chance to try something? Have you heard of entropion surgerys like this where his eyelids don't open? The University told us(after the surgery) they may not open at all. Thanks, always wanted your opinion on this.  Lynn

Answer
I am not a veterinarian and can not make a medical diagnosis over the internet. I am not familiar with UMN, so I can't comment on that, either.

Entropion can be hereditary, or due to obesity. Some pigs have naturally chubby faces, and are prone to entropion even when they are at a healthy weight.

Surgery for entropion is supposed to allow the eye to open, so if his eyes are not opening, there's something very wrong. The excessive drainage is also very worrisome.

I recommend contacting Forgotten Angels Rescue and Education Center, www.farec.org and explain what has happened. They can connect you with a veterinarian who specializes in pot-bellied pigs and has experience with entropion, and can advise you on what to do next, and guide to you a veterinary clinic that you feel more comfortable with.

In the meantime, try gently cleaning his eyes with a damp paper towel or soft cloth. Wipe away as much as possible. If piggy feels comfortable with this, you might want to try gently opening up his eyelid.
