Degu ear infection

i hope your rodent expertise also includes degus
my question is my degu Kraky(4 y/old) has red-ish ears and tilts his head when i move his ear so i can see in, i found a very tiny insect in his food, is it related? i called a vet and they said to put calamine lotion
will it heal on its own or do i need a vet? i cant realy afford it so what can i do?

Being that it is illegal to have a Degus as a pet in my state so therefore I have no first hand experience with them.
However, I would suggest a vet no matter what. He may have an ear infection.  You may need to ask a friend or family member for a loan.
