Question
My rat got stuck underneath the sofa and when she came out, we don't know how this happened, like 1 inch on her tail was off but her bone was still there she was bleeding and the first two days it really hurt her but shes okay now and it's dry and scabbing up but im worried about infection and i just want this to end and have the bone fall off but also i've heard you can cut off the bone but i've never heard about the owner doing it just the vet.But can i cut off the bone?would it be to risky?I know you cut it off then treat it with antibiotics but i just don't know what kind and i've been putting "Triple Antibiotic Ointment+Pain Relief" on her tail is this the right kind? and she has a old shirt as her bedding and we're trying to stay away from infection.

Answer
Hi

Do NOT cut the bone. Remember, the tail is part of the rats vertabrae, and it is full of nerves and veins etc... It may dry up and become necrotic but this should still be seen by a vet. He will be able to take care of it properly so infection doesnt set in and cause even more problems.  She may be given oral antibiotics as well.  If you cut that  end off you may cut a major artery and cause bleeding that cannot stop, or cause serious infection that causes sepsis.

Do you have a vet you can take her to see that is board certified in exotics?
