Question
i am a new rat owner. My rat is about 8 to 9 wks old. I baught her from a local pet store. i have been feeding her scraps from our dinner. i noticed a smell in her cage when i went to get her out. i then noticed a few areas in her cage that had green soft looking stool. why is her stool that color an why does she smell alittle?

Answer
Hi Angela

Your rat has abnormal stools because she is given a poor diet that is not suited for her and her body isnt digesting properly.

Please read up on rat diets and how to feed her properly in order for her to have a long healthy life.  Rats cannot handle high protein and high fats in foods among other things so the best way to resolve her stool problems is to feed her food that will digest properly.
This means no more table scraps for rattie! :(

ALso since your new to rats take a look at my entire site.It is geared toward new rat owners and also veteran rat owners alike.  Its always a good idea to learn all yo can learn about rat health etc...so you dont have to learn from mistakes as yo go at the expense of the rat.
Here is the URL.
A good vet for rats is an exotic vet and they are no more expensive than a regular vet. The problem is they are not easy to find so I will do what I can so you can have names for the future rather than frantically searching for someone when it may be an emergency.

I look forward to your response!
