My new rat

I recently just got this really adorable rat, I never knew that they could be kept as pets. So when my hampster ran away we talked too the lady there and she mentioned a rat...well my question is,I have been worried sick about what im doing right or wrong for him. (rascal), He sneezes alot, I mean we smoke ciggarets but not around him *directly*, And I only hope I am doing what is right...when it comes too toys homes etc im freaking out..maybe you can just fill me in (i have been looking up things online..but still confused)..Help

 A lot of pet store rats come with respiratory illnesses from not being treated correctly.  The cigarettes could be contributing to the problem as well; rats have very sensitive respiratory systems.  Pine and cedar bedding, an unclean cage, and improper ventilation can also cause respiratory illness to occur.  To get rid of his infection you'll likely have to take him to the vet for some antibiotics.  If you treat it early he'll likely recover quickly.
