uterine prolapse in rats

Question
Hi Sandy, Yesterday I went with my son and his pet rat to the vets - the rat was a female aged approx 13 months. It appeared to have had a uterine prolapse, which the vet described as necrotic, and advised us to have the rat put to sleep. This seemed a shame, as it was still bright and lively, and it was very sad for both my son and I to have to do this on Christmas eve. We will certainly be getting another rat, but could there be anything in dietary terms that we should avoid in future? And, out of interest, do you think that this could have been operated on successfully? The vet seemed to think not, and suggested that it would recur, and also be an expensive process. I'd be very interested to see your thoughts on this matter. Thanks for your help - and Happy Christmas from dull and cloudy London!

Answer
Spaying the little girl would be the way to go.  Why in the world wouldnt he consider that?

Uterus removed, problem resolved.

I think maybe another vet would be the way to go rather than one that is looking for the easy way out.

Happy holidays to you as well. I cant say we are dull and cloudy, we were 70 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny in the southern united states although I dont call that a very festive weather either. Bring on a white Christmas! Wooot!   :)
