QUESTION: this isn't really a follow up....
I have two male  6-7 month old rats who are sweet siamese brothers. when i
first got them, when they were 10 weeks, they were all love with each other.
lately though, they've having standoffish behavior, sizing each other up and
standing then wrestling. when the first started wrestling it  looked like play,
but now it's evoking some horrendous sounds from the smaller of the two.
they have some sharp nails, and bloody fur. is it from scratching themselves,
or from fighting? right now i have them in separate cages, because an attack
a minutes ago that got me worried when my smaller rat started to scream.
they've been aggressive towards each other, and is this play or for real, they
get about an hour out of their cage a day, in a much bigger cage with new
things. is this developing into something serious?

Answer
Did you buy them from a breeder?

Right now this is the age they go through puberty and their hormones are up and down. They usually outgrow it but they are trying to decide who the alpha is, and it seems they both want the honors. The peak is around 8 months and after that it drops down again.  If it gets really out of hand you can opt to have them bother neutered by a very skilled vet that has alot of experience with rats.
