Question
QUESTION: My pet rat "Noodle" of just about 2 years now recently lost her friend, she has been going in and out of depression through out the past month. (meaning some days she wakes up happy and hyper and others she sits around the cage and doesnt eat anything). For the past 2 days she has porphyrin around her nose and eyes, her right cheek is swollen a little, she has lost some weight (but is still drinking water), and is more lethargic than usual. At first I just thought it was another bad day but I think this is more serious. I'm currently living away from my normal vet, so I dont know what to do. What can I do to help her? I'll be back home in about 2 weeks but that may be too long.

ANSWER: She may have an abscess inside her mouth or in her gums.

You will need to find a good vet where your located now. Let me know and I have a database for good exotic vets or general vets that have a strong interest in exotics and have gone the extra distance as far as going to exotic mammal workshops and seminars etc...to keep up to date on proper care for exotic companion mammals.  The weight loss could very well be because she cant eat well due to whatever the mass is related too.

QUESTION: I'm sure you hate to hear this, but, I have a really limited income. Is there anyone that you know that is college student friendly, or maybe there is something I can do.

Answer
Dr. Monaco is really really nice. Go on the website and find his email.  Email him and tell him you got his name from Sandra, from sandyscrittercity and also from allexperts and I have sent you to him as well as many many other people too.  Tell him your rat has a mass on her face and you are in college and if he can help you out, take a look at her for you and maybe let you pay half and the other half a few weeks later etc...   Chances are he will be more than happy but you need to ask the vet, never the general staff members.
